Today was a beautiful day so we slathered on the sun screen and hopped on the bikes.
This was the first time we hit a toll bike trail. It cost $4 each to get a trail pass for the day.
We started in downtown Hill City at the train station. That was the end of the line for the actual tracks. From there, we headed south on the uphill direction of the trail. We could have gone 40 more miles in that direction, but I don't think our batteries would hold out. We went almost 8 miles out before we turned around. Here are some pictures of the trip.
At one point we went over Highway 16 and at another point, we went under Highway 16.
I was taking pictures as I was pedaling and that caught up to me. Most of the time it works fine. One problem with the small camera is that clicking the button doesn't mean the picture is taken a split second later. If it's trying to focus, it can take a couple of seconds. I took several pictures of the ground or my bike tire because I thought I got the picture, but I didn't. I even missed a picture of a yellow bellied marmot because I was trying to zoom in and the camera couldn't focus fast enough. The worst was yet to come.
I was trying to take a picture of a cabin but the camera couldn't focus because I was going to fast. My camera was in my right hand, so I braked with my left hand. My left had controls the front wheel brake so over I went. Again the camera had a hard time focusing so it took the picture late. Here is the shot I got.
No damage except for my big toe.
There are more pictures on the South Dakota page.
