Harlingen Part 2

The weather here has been hot, humid, and windy.

On Saturday, we took a drive to South Padre Island. Apparently, so did everyone else. It took use 30 minutes to get the first 30 miles, and another 30 minutes to get the last 5 miles as everyone has to funnel over one bridge.

The weather was perfect (maybe a little hot for Brie). We drove on to the island and found a little restaurant on the bay side of the island (not the gulf side), called Mahi Nic's. It specialized in Mexican seafood. As you can see from the picture above (which I took from our table), we sat right next to the water. Here are a couple more pictures from the restaurant.

After lunch we drove up the island. The southern end of the island is the populated side. It has all the hotels and touristy stuff. It is a step above Myrtle Beach in that it doesn't have nearly as much cheesy stuff like miniature golf and beach clothes stores. Once you get past the populated section, you get to the state park section and you get the actual beaches. As I said before, we were there on the day before Easter and so was everyone else. Driving up the island looked like this.

And this

I don't know if you could find a place to put your towel down without putting it over someone else. This was on the gulf side of the island. The bay side of the island did not have as many people. It did have a lot of kite surfers. It looked like you had to go past a bunch of No Trespassing signs to get to the kite surfing area, but that didn't stop anybody.

Since Monday, the weather turned bad. The wind picked up and it rained on Tuesday and Wednesday. We probably won't do much else before we leave on Friday.

We changed our plans for Friday. We were supposed to go back to Corpus Christi but the highway going through there was all under construction and tore up. We thought the roads were going to tear up the trailer. I canceled that reservation and made another one further inland in a town called George West. We had never heard of the place, but it has great reviews on all the RV sites.

After that, we will be near Houston so we may do a little house hunting while we are there. When we started this trip, Texas real estate was real cheap. Since then, it has caught up to the rest of the country.

Here are all the Texas pictures. I know we have 3 more stops in Texas, but I don't know that we do much more sightseeing at those stops. They are mostly just to get us to New Orleans.
