Jan and I took our bikes out this morning and rode around the park. It was fun. It was a Saturday morning so it was also a little busy. Most people were heading to the lake to launch boats or to go fishing. We really like our ebikes! I highly recommend one if you can get it.
This park is a Thousand Trails campground so it is free to us. One of the problems with a Thousand Trails campground is that they don't have the income that independent parks have and that means that maintenance suffers. There are more closed off sites here than there is at other parks. We talked to one guy here who spends most of his time going from one Texas Thousand Trails park to another. He has hit almost all of them now and he says that this park is the worst of them. It desperately needs an electrician, a plumber, and whole lot of tree trimming and general shrub clean up.
This a very large park with over 350 sites. Granted, about 1/4 of them are out of service with either a 'Site Closed' sign or a red electric box. The red electric box means there is no electricity at the site. I guess you could stay there if you want, but you can't use a generator so you will be running off your battery.
There is no wifi except in the Activity Center and that is closed because of Covid-19. Verizon does cover the area pretty well. We have 3 or 4 bars. Although without wifi we have blown through our hotspot data plan already.
The scenery is nice. It's very woodsy. Most of the trees are oaks with a few other types here and there. The dead branches are not completely dead. Air plants grow in clumps on all the dead branches. They look like little balls of tentacles with little flower stalks sticking out.
Deer are everywhere. We have to go slow in the truck and the bikes because they jump out of the woods with no warning. I got tired of taking pictures of the deer so I probably won't take any more.
Will we ever come back here? Only if we want to spend time in San Antonio. There is not much else to do in the area except for San Antonio.
P.S. My beer set up is working. The beer is a little warm at 79 degrees, but still in the good range. I will keep checking.
