Memphis, Part 2

This is our final day in the Memphis area. Here is how close the planes are:

That wakes us up in the morning.

Yesterday, we spent the day in Memphis. First, we took a walk over the Mississippi River. They have a lot of walking/bike trails along the river. The one we took is called the Big River Bridge path. It starts in Memphis and goes over a train bridge to Arkansas. We started with Brie walking, but it was hot and she didn’t last long before she went in the carrier. She wasn’t the only one, when we got to the Arkansas side there was a lady lying down in the shade and her friend was fanning her. We gave them a bottle of water we had for Brie. Here are pictures of the walk.

A post or so back, I talked about how green Arkansas is. This is what I was talking about.

The whole state looks like this once you get a little east of Little Rock. Little Rock itself has more trees. We did not make it to the Ozarks because it was too far. We plan on coming back to Arkansas to explore them later.

After the walking trip, we went to downtown Memphis. It’s still weird to go to a downtown area in the middle of the week and see it deserted. Beale Street is the night club area, but it is closed to vehicle traffic so we skipped it.

We saw the exit for Graceland and we took that. The area around it is a big disappointment. A bunch of cheap stuff trying to capitalize on the fact that people only come to see Graceland. I, personally, did not take any pictures while there. Jan took a couple of pictures when we tried to go into the parking lot. You can’t get close enough to see it without paying first so we skipped it. Jan took a picture of Elvis’s planes and the main sign. I think she posted them on Facebook.

To top the day off, we went to the Memphis Barbeque Company

restaurant. It is run by a woman who holds the most wins for national cook offs, and she was a judge on Chopped for the grilling shows. We ordered the BBQ Platter with spare ribs, baby back ribs, sliced turkey breast, sliced brisket, spicy grits, turnip greens, baked beans, and corn bread. It was awesome. The spare ribs were the best. The desserts were a let down. The bread pudding was too dense and the Memphis Mud Pie was a brownie with ice cream.

Saturday is a travel day. We head for Decatur, Alabama and then to North Carolina.
