We met up with Laurie, a friend from CA, who moved to North Carolina. She showed us around the area. This is Laurie and Jan.
On Friday she took us to the Ocoee River. This is where they did the white water kayaking during the Atlanta Olympics. They built up the rocks and put in a dam to control how much water comes through. It looks pretty cool. Unfortunately, the water was low while we were there.
After that, we went to Copperhill, on the border between NC and Georgia. They are trying to build up the tourism there and are doing a good job. A train brings people up the gorge and lets them out in town. We were there just as the train was leaving and missed most of the crowd. That’s good because we were able to find a seat at Burra Burra. It’s a restaurant that overlooks the river.
Today, Laurie took us to Lake Vogel. We walked around the lake and went to the waterfall. It is the end of the tourist season so the crowd was small.
We went to lunch afterwards at a place called Jim’s Smokin’ Que (and Debbie’s too). It’s a local BBQ place that’s only open Thursday through Sunday and they start smoking the meat on Tuesdays. They didn’t cook enough since they ran out of pork and grits. I had turkey, Jan had ribs, and Laurie had brisket. According to Jan, the ribs are better than the ribs in Memphis.
In other news, we got a new bike rack for the trailer. This one swings out and lets me get into the back storage area. Any one need a bike rack? I have an extra. We also got a new dog fence. Not exciting news for everyone, but good for us. Thank you Laurie for letting us have stuff delivered to your house.
Our mail is still missing. 14 days so far. I submitted a missing mail form. Since I have a tracking number, they might be able to find it.
There are more pictures on the Photos page.
Tomorrow, we head out to Advance, NC. It will be a long drive.
