Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach is a vacation town stuck in the '60's. Everything was built then. There is obviously still a lot of vacation money coming in because everything is still maintained and still painted. It is just stuck in a time warp.

It is definitely a family oriented town. There are more miniature golf places than I have ever seen. Also there are zip line places for the older kids and a few go-cart tracks. Everything else is cheap clothing stores, ice cream shops, and souvenir stores. For dining out, there are about 100 pancake shops. Bill told us that it is called the Redneck Riveria.

The beach was all white sands and not too crowded. It was still early in the season and will probably get more crowded when summer rolls in. There were people standing at the surf line with short poles with little strainer scoops at the end. They scoop up the gravel and look for shark teeth. I guess if you want to make a little money, you can collect shark teeth and sell them to the souvenir stores who in turn sell shark tooth jewelry.

We also went to Brookgreen Gardens. It is an old plantation turned into a garden and an art gallery. Here are some pictures, there are more in the South Carolina photo page.

It is azalea time here in the Old South. If you watched any of the Masters Golf from Georgia some of it. Here are some of the azaleas we saw.
