Poland, NY

We are in Poland, NY which is right next to Russia and Norway and we are staying next to West Canada Creek. It's very international here.

The weather in Vermont was good when we left, but it started raining as we pulled into the campground. There were a few good thunderstorms that poured down.

The trip from Vermont to New York was beautiful (except for Whitehall, NY). Most of Vermont looks like Highway 50 from Placerville to Tahoe. It is all small towns and I think only 2 cities, Rutland and Montepelier (at least the maple lady said they were the only 2 cities).

The trip took us through the Appalachian Trail scenic highway. It did cross the actual Appalachian hiking trail in a few places. It's probably even more beautiful in the fall when all the maple trees turn color. In New York, the forests seem to be more varied in trees. Vermont was basically maple with a few spruce and pines thrown in. New York has more oak and less maple.

Here are a few things we learned on the drive:

The US Navy started in Whitehall, NY, well away from the ocean, but near the Great Lakes. During the Revolutionary War, the US was more concerned with controlling the interior waterways and couldn't compete with England for the oceans. Also, the navy was started by Benedict Arnold.

Norman Rockwell lived here and now has a museum in Vermont.

For Kim, Justin Morgan lived in Randolph Center and they have a plaque by the road for where his house used to be. He is the guy who bred the first Morgan horses.

Upstate New York is all about the Revolutionary War. Forts and battlegrounds are everywhere.

When Vermont picks a town name, they run with it. There was Randolph, Randolph Center, and East Randolph. Most towns have at least one North or South town town to go with the main town name. They can and do go up to 4 variations on the same town name.

We are near the Erie Canal and the Finger Lakes.

Lake Ontario will be the first Great Lake we hit.

I probably won't blog too much about Poland, we will only be here for one day and it may rain again. About the only thing we will do is get propane, catch up on laundry, and go out to dinner.
