We went from Fortuna to Red Bluff through highway 299 and the Monument Fire.

We left Fortuna at 9am. 299 is mostly closed. They only let cars through every 1 and 1/2 hours. We tried to time it for the 11:30 window. I guess we left a little early because we got to the flagger at a few minutes before 11. We sat there for over 30 minutes. I did take Porter out to pee while we were waiting.

The smoke was terrible. The highway follows the Trinity River once you get beyond Willow Creek. You could barely see the other side of the canyon. The smoke burned our eyes and throats. Brie did not like it at all. While we were sitting and waiting for the flagger to let us through, I tried to turn off the truck, but it was too hot and smokey. We needed the air conditioner so I turned it back on.

The drive through the burned area was bad. It was about 10 miles of burned stuff. They are still working on 2 fires in the area.

We made it safely (and unburnt) to Red Bluff. We are staying at the same RV park we always stay at in Red Bluff. They sold it so it’s not Durango anymore, it’s now the Red Bluff KOA. You just can’t get away from the KOA’s.
