We have been traveling and doing a little too much for me to keep up with the blog and photos. It is a rainy day here in Cape Hatteras so I am trying to catch up.
The colorful things in front of the truck is the train for little kids.
The park is right on the beach. Our space is not on the beach, in fact, it as far from the beach as possible in the park but it is still in walking distance.
There is more history on this long, skinny island than you would think possible. Kitty Hawk is about 30 miles north. I will write about that a little later on. The place where Blackbeard the Pirate lived after his ship sank is about 30 miles south. The Roanoke colony was on an island between this island and the mainland. Croatan, where they may have gone is nearby too. A lot of stuff is named Dare or Virginia Dare. She was the first colonist baby born in what would be America.
We went to see Kitty Hawk. It is smaller than you think. It didn't take a lot of room to make the first powered flight. The most impressive thing in the park is Kill Devil Hill with the monument to the Wright Brothers. They used the hill for their glider experiments. In 1901 and 1902, they launched gliders off the hill. In 1903, they were ready to try powered flight. They had a finished design for the airplane and they had a 12hp motor running. They put a steel rail on the ground with a cart to roll down the rail. The plane went on the cart. The first 3 flights did not go far. The fourth flight went a long way. You can see a big rock in the pictures and 3 smaller rocks about 100 feet away. Those mark the distance of the first 3 flights. In the distance is a fourth rock that marks where the best flight landed. I put most of the pictures in the North Carolina photo page. This blog only has some of them.
In other news:
We looked through our summer schedule and saw some really long travel days. Especially the route from Maine to Ohio. We spent the morning rescheduling that section of the trip. I have not updated the map yet, but I will. I have to make reservations and cancel reservations first. We added a stop near Niagra Falls. We've never been there.
I will be adding new states on the Photo page soon. Virgina, Maryland, and New Jersey are coming up fast.
